Printing and manufacturing terms explained

Here we come to the heart of a classic board game: the board. It’s the canvas for your biggest ideas, and it needs to be tough if it’s going to endure enthusiastically-placed tokens, the splash zone of the occasional spilled drink, and of course its own inevitable popularity - so we pulled out all the stops to make sure your board is built to last. Create the perfect canvas for your game by mixing and matching choices from our wide variety of options.

We start with a core of rock-solid, environmentally-friendly recycled 1200gsm grey board. Choose from small, medium, large, and extra-large sizes to suit our range of game boxes, with options for bi-fold or quad-fold boards for those who want to make the most of the available space. Your board is then wrapped in strong 128gsm paper printed with your design in vibrant full-colour CMYK on one or both sides. Single-sided boards get a tactile backing of 110gsm black textured paper. For the printed sides, select a silky-smooth finish or a classic linen texture, and top it all off with tough-as-nails lamination in luxurious matte or shiny gloss.

Frequently asked questions

A component is simply a custom item for your board game. Selecting a component will allow you to change its properties to suit the game you have planned.

Your boardgame will typically consist of various types of components. Most of these components can be heavily stylised by adding your own artwork and will have numerous options to tailor the component to suit your needs.

The two most important things to consider are:

  • The size of the board you need when it's unfolded and ready for play and
  • The box size you need to fit it into when folded to be put away.

Taking those two things into account, decide whether you prefer a bi-fold or a quad-fold board, whether you want to print on one side or both sides of the board, choose a finish on the printed sides, and select from the sizes available. For more compact board games, you may prefer a bi-fold, whereas long epic adventures may require a large quad-fold board to create an immersive tabletop experience. Read more about our game board options.

When designing your custom board game, you’ll need to select cards of different sizes and shapes depending on what the card is for and how it will be used.

We offer a wide variety of playing card sizes in square or standard rectangular shapes. Whether you wish to print entire card decks for your game, or simply have a few cards act as tokens or markers, our print-on-demand service can meet your needs. Visit our component library to learn more about our varying card shapes and sizes.

We also have the right-sized game box for your custom-made game board. Your game box can fit your customised components and other accessories. Learn more about our game board options.

The components in your custom game board should match the atmosphere of the game's narrative. Customising your game's components draws your players in, creating an immersive game experience before the first move is even made. Not only can we create custom board game boxes to keep all the pieces in one place, but also other items, such as drawstring bags, to keep the components organised and in good condition within these boxes. Keep in mind that having specialised components for your project will affect production costs and timelines. Understanding these factors is essential during the board game prototyping phase, where every detail counts. Learn more about how we can become your custom board game manufacturer for larger orders.

Our custom game cards come in various sizes, from Mini-American and Tarot to Poker and more.

The cardstock options available are 300gsm or 350gsm white core, and 320gsm black core. The weight of the cardstock determines how thick it is – a heavier cardstock is generally thicker than a lighter cardstock.

For a more luxurious play experience, consider upgrading the texture from smooth to linen. All Launch Lab cards are finished with a smooth varnish to ensure they shuffle and play well, and to give them resistance against wear and tear. Learn more about our card options.

Yes, we do. We aim to create board games that are accessible to everyone. This includes providing colour options for custom-made board game accessories such as dice and meeples that work just as well for players with colour-vision deficiency. These colours are clearly marked for you to choose from when creating your game.

When customising these pieces, it's important to ensure that the foreground and background colours can be distinguished from each other. We use and recommend Who Can Use to determine whether the colours selected provide enough contrast for all types of vision.

Apart from your game board and box, you can customise game components and accessories. These include custom names, quantity, size/shape, finish, 1-sided/2-sided printing, and colour. Here is more detail on the customisable options available:

  • Name: The option to give a custom name to a component for easy identification.
  • Quantity: You can select how many components you need.
  • Size/Shape: Options are available for the size and shape of components, such as tokens and dice.
  • Finish: Many textures and coatings, such as gloss, matte, linen, and smooth are available.
  • 1-Sided/2-Sided Printing: You can customise printed cards and game boards by printing custom art on one or both sides.
  • Colour: Many colour options are available for components like tokens, dice, and meeples.

Options may vary depending on the component type. With our many options, you have the flexibility to create any game from your imagination. Learn more about customisation.
