Understand and solve colour issues in your print file

Error: Registration colour

Your Launch Lab Preflight Report PDF has returned the following warning:

What is the problem?

In a CMYK document, which prints using a mix of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks to create all other colours, Registration black is the name given to a 100% mix of all four inks. It looks black, and appears in your Swatches palette as ‘Registration’.

You should never use Registration black as a substitute for black. It has a technical use in printing, where it indicates cropping and alignment. Using it elsewhere in a document can cause problems in the printing process.

How do I fix it?

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

To find everywhere that Registration Black appears in your document:

  • In the top menu, select Window > Swatches.
  • This will open the Swatches Palette.
  • The Registration swatch should be the second swatch along, and it will probably look like a small target icon on white, though in some views it may look black.
  • Click the Registration swatch to select Registration colour.
  • Draw a small square somewhere off the side of your document. Set the square's Fill and Stroke to Registration.
  • Click the square to select it.
  • In the top menu, click Select > Same > Fill Color.
  • This will select all objects in your document with a Registration fill.
  • In the Color Panel, adjust the sliders to C 0% / M 0% / Y 0% / K 100%.
  • This will change any Registration fills into true black.
  • Deselect everything, then select your square again.
  • In the top menu click Select > Same > Stroke Color.
  • This will select all objects in your document with a Registration stroke.
  • In the Color Panel, adjust the sliders to C 0% / M 0% / Y 0% / K 100%.
  • This will change any Registration strokes into true black.
