Understand and solve document security issues in your print file

Error: Document is encrypted

Your Launch Lab Preflight Report PDF has returned the following error:

What is the problem?

Your PDF is password-locked, so we are unable to open or print it.

If you didn't set this password deliberately, it's possible that when you are exporting from Illustrator or InDesign, you're using a PDF preset (a particular set of export settings) that includes encryption by default.

How do I fix it?

You can turn off document encryption while exporting your file to PDF from Adobe Illustrator or InDesign.

Alternatively, you can remove the password using Acrobat Pro, though you'll need to remember what password you set.

Affinity software doesn't offer password protection as an option, so no instructions are required for those.

Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

  • In the top menu, click File > Save As…
  • In the Format drop-down list, select Photoshop PDF.
  • Click Save.
  • This will bring up the Save Adobe PDF dialog box.
  • Set your PDF options up as usual.
  • In the left menu of the Save Adobe PDF dialog box, click Security.
  • You will see checkboxes labelled ‘Require a password to open the document’, and ‘Use a password to restrict printing, editing and other tasks’.
  • Make sure these checkboxes are NOT ticked.
  • Click Save PDF.
  • Re-upload your file to Launch Lab.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

As an alternative, password protection can be removed by opening the existing PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Open your PDF in Acrobat Pro.
  • Choose Tools › Encrypt › Remove Security.
  • If the PDF has a Document Open password, click OK to remove it.
  • If the document has a Permissions password, type the correct password in the Enter Password box and then click OK.
  • Save your file and re-upload it to Launch Lab.
